Portrait and commercial photographer Daniel Norton is back with another episode of his OnSet video series for Adorama. In the video below, Norton shows how to use one of his favorite light modifiers, one which is not particularly common, the lantern.
The lantern is more often used for video when trying to light wide scenes, but it can be used as part of a one-light portrait setup as well. It creates soft light and is basically an orb-like soft box. When lighting a portrait, you don’t need to light the entire area, you only need to light what will be in the image frame. To harness otherwise wasted light, Norton puts black fabric around the unnecessary portion of the lantern, which you can see in the video. To learn how to set up and best utilize a lantern light modifier as part of a one-light portrait setup, watch the full video below. To see more from Daniel Norton, visit his website.
