Ricoh is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the original GR1 with a new limited-edition compact camera. The Ricoh GR IV 30th Anniversary Edition Kit is now available for pre-order from B&H Photo, with production limited to just 3,000 units worldwide.
The special edition costs $1,799.95, putting it above the standard GR IV but below the GR IV Monochrome.
A GR IV Inspired by the Original GR1
The original GR1 was released in October 1996, establishing the GR series around image quality, quick response, and portability. Ricoh says those principles remain central to the current GR lineup, which has become particularly popular among street photographers looking for a discreet and portable camera.
The 30th Anniversary Edition is based on the GR IV but incorporates several design elements inspired by the first-generation GR1.
The camera features a GR1-inspired color scheme on the shutter release and rear buttons. It also gets a special-edition ring cap with a diamond-cut finish based on the area surrounding the lens of the original GR1.
Ricoh says the ring cap is designed so the diamond-cut surfaces catch light when the lens is retracted without producing unwanted reflections on subjects while shooting.
The camera also displays a special power-off graphic when it is switched off.
Exclusive Anniversary Accessories
The kit includes several accessories created specifically for the 30th anniversary edition.
There is a genuine leather finger strap engraved with “30th ANNIVERSARY,” along with a special metal hot shoe cover featuring the 30th anniversary logo on the front and “RICOH GR” on the reverse.
The kit also includes 16 special pin badges. Fourteen represent previous GR models, while the remaining two feature the kit-exclusive 30th anniversary logo and the GR logo.
“Since the release of the RICOH GR1 film camera in October 1996, the GR Series has been committed to the essential values of the GR including high image quality, quick response, and portability, in pursuit of the ultimate snapshot camera,” Ricoh says.
“The current products in the series have continued to demonstrate that same, unwavering commitment, and we are deeply grateful for the support they have received from both professionals and experienced amateurs alike.”
