The RF85mm F/2 Macro IS STM combines the classic 85mm portrait focal length with a 1:2 maximum magnification ratio for closer compositions. Its bright F/2 aperture also makes it useful in low-light situations while producing the shallow depth of field and background separation that photographers often want from an 85mm lens. At $589, it is an appealing option for Canon RF shooters looking for a versatile prime.
Canon RF85mm F2 Macro is STM
Combining a short-telephoto field of view with a sleek design and close-focusing performance, the Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM is a well-rounded lens… for a range of subjects, from portraits to macro subjects. Its close focus design enables working with subject matter as close as 1.15' away with a 1:2 maximum magnification and the STM stepping motor affords impressively quiet and smooth autofocus performance and full-time manual focus override. Helping to create sharp imagery, the lens also features optical image stabilization, along with Hybrid IS, to suppress up to five stops of camera shake for cleaner, steadier shooting. A UD (Ultra low Dispersion) element is also used in the optical design to minimize aberrations and ensure clarity. Additionally, a configurable Control Ring lets you adjust exposure settings, including ISO, aperture, and exposure compensation, from the lens itself.
Why We Like the Canon RF85mm F/2 Macro IS STM
The 85mm focal length is a classic choice for portrait photography, and the RF85mm F/2 delivers the look you’d expect while keeping the lens relatively compact. Its F/2 maximum aperture provides good subject separation and attractive background blur while allowing more light into the lens for handheld shooting in challenging conditions.
What makes this lens particularly versatile is its close-focusing capability. The 0.5x maximum magnification lets you get considerably closer to your subjects than a conventional portrait lens, making it useful for details, products, flowers, and other small subjects. Optical image stabilization rated at up to 5 stops also helps when shooting handheld.
Key Features:
- Classic Portrait Prime: The 85mm focal length provides a flattering perspective for portraits and is also useful for events, weddings, lifestyle photography, and other situations where you want a tighter field of view. The lens is designed for Canon’s full-frame RF-mount mirrorless cameras.
- Bright F/2 Aperture: The F/2 maximum aperture strikes a good balance between light-gathering ability and a relatively compact form factor. It can help when shooting in available light while also providing the shallow depth of field and background separation associated with portrait photography.
- Macro Capabilities: Unlike many 85mm portrait lenses, the RF85mm F/2 can focus closely and offers 0.5x, or 1:2, maximum magnification. Its minimum focusing distance of approximately 1.15 feet makes it possible to fill the frame with smaller subjects and capture fine details.
- Optical Image Stabilization: The built-in Optical Image Stabilizer provides up to 5 stops of shake correction, helping produce sharper handheld images when using slower shutter speeds. Its Hybrid IS system also compensates for angular and shift-type camera movements, which is particularly useful during close-up shooting.
- Fast AF Motor: Canon’s STM stepping motor provides fast, quiet, and smooth autofocus. That makes the lens useful for still photography as well as video, where minimizing focus noise and maintaining smooth transitions are important.
Who Is This For and Is It a Good Time to Buy?
The Canon RF85mm F/2 Macro IS STM is a great choice for photographers who want a classic portrait lens with additional close-focusing capabilities. Its 85mm focal length and F/2 aperture make it well suited to portraits, events, and weddings, while the 1:2 magnification gives it additional versatility for detail and close-up photography.
It can also be useful for video creators who want a tighter perspective for portraits, interviews, and other compositions where subject separation is important.
At $589, the lens is $100 below its regular price, making this a compelling opportunity for Canon RF shooters looking for an affordable 85mm prime. With Amazon Prime Day underway, it is worth checking out while the discount is available.
