Sigma has announced the 50mm F1.4 CL DG Contemporary, a full-frame prime lens that combines a vintage-inspired design with a compact build and modern autofocus. It is the first lens in the company’s new CL series and was announced alongside the FP2, a compact, modular full-frame mirrorless camera.
The lens features an aluminum barrel, an aperture ring, a focus ring, and a depth-of-field scale. Its design is rounded out by a knurled screw-on lens hood, giving it a classic appearance while retaining a metal construction.
Despite its F1.4 maximum aperture, the lens measures just 65mm long and weighs 375g. That makes it substantially smaller and lighter than the Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG DN Art, which measures 110mm and weighs 670g. It is also similar in size to the Sigma 50mm F2 DG Contemporary from the company’s I series, although the new F1.4 version is slightly heavier and shorter. The lens accepts 52mm filters.
Optical Design and Bokeh
The Sigma 50mm F1.4 CL DG Contemporary uses nine elements in six groups, including three aspherical elements and one FLD element. Sigma says the optical design helps reduce aberrations and ghosting while keeping the lens compact and lightweight.
The company also emphasizes the lens’s rendering at its maximum aperture. Sigma says it is designed to produce smooth background blur and a strong sense of three-dimensionality at F1.4, with particular attention paid to gradual transitions in out-of-focus areas.
Autofocus and Manual Focus
Autofocus is driven by Sigma’s Rotary Direct Drive actuator. The system arranges coils and magnets in a circular configuration to create what the company describes as a slim, high-torque autofocus mechanism.
Rather than using a conventional internal focusing design, the lens employs a whole-lens extension focusing system. Sigma says this approach helps keep the overall lens compact.
The focus ring also provides a quick way to switch to manual focus. Turning the ring automatically engages manual focus mode, eliminating the need to operate a separate AF/MF switch. The lens has a minimum focusing distance of 0.45m.
Build Quality and Design Details
The lens features an all-metal construction with dust- and moisture-resistant design elements. Its depth-of-field scale rotates with the focus ring, while a matching magnetic lens cap complements the lens’s vintage-inspired styling.
Together, the metal barrel, tactile controls, and compact dimensions give the lens a distinctly classic look without abandoning modern autofocus functionality.
Pricing and Availability
Sigma has not announced pricing or an exact release date for the 50mm F1.4 CL DG Contemporary as of writing. The lens is expected to become available in early spring and will be offered in Sony E and Leica L mounts. B&H Photo has already set up a page for the lens where users can be notified when it becomes available.
