Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III VXD G2 for Sony E-Mount

Featuring an updated optical design and refined focusing system, the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 is a Sony E-mount zoom offering a versatile…

Why We Like the Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8 G2

The lens covers a useful standard zoom range, moving from moderately wide-angle framing at 28mm to short telephoto at 75mm. That makes it suitable for everything from environmental portraits and landscapes to tighter compositions and everyday snapshots. Its constant f/2.8 maximum aperture also lets you maintain the same exposure settings throughout the zoom range, while providing more flexibility in dim environments and helping create a shallow depth of field.

Autofocus is handled by Tamron’s VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor, designed for fast, precise, and quiet focusing. This is useful when photographing people, animals, and other moving subjects, as well as when recording video where distracting focusing noise can be an issue. The lens also offers strong close-focusing capabilities, with a minimum object distance of 0.18 meters at the wide end and 0.38 meters at the telephoto end. That gives you additional flexibility for detail shots and close-up compositions.

Portability is another advantage. At approximately 540 grams, the lens is relatively lightweight for a full-frame f/2.8 standard zoom. Tamron also includes moisture-resistant construction and a fluorine coating on the front element to help protect against dirt, water, and fingerprints. These features make it a convenient option for photographers who want a fast everyday zoom without carrying a particularly heavy setup.

What to Consider Before Buying

The 28-75mm focal range doesn’t extend as wide as the increasingly common 24-70mm standard zoom range. That missing 4mm can make a difference when photographing architecture, interiors, or expansive landscapes, so consider whether you regularly need wider framing. The lens also lacks built-in optical image stabilization, meaning you’ll need to rely on your camera’s IBIS, a stabilized shooting setup, or faster shutter speeds to reduce camera shake.

There is no dedicated AF/MF switch on the lens barrel, so you’ll need to change focusing modes through your camera’s controls. Also, make sure you select the correct mount version before ordering. Tamron offers separate Sony E-mount and Nikon Z-mount versions, and they are not interchangeable.
