Nikon S6900 Review -- First Impressions

by Gannon Burgett
Posted 02/09/2015

Looking to improve upon their "Ultra-Slim Zoom Cameras," Nikon has announced the Coolpix S6900. A successor the the company's mid-range, Wi-Fi-capable Coolpix S6800, this new iteration slightly alters the visual appearance of the camera from the front, and humbly improves upon the internal components to offer a solid point-and-shoot at roughly the same price point.

Identical to the S6800, the Coolpix S6900's optical offering is a 25-300mm (35mm equivalent) NIKKOR ED 12x zoom lens with "lens-shift" VR image stabilization. Behind the glass is a familiar 16-megapixel 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor, which can fire at 9 frames per second up to a 7 image buffer and capture Full HD video at 30p and 60i.

On the back, however, the Coolpix S6900 features a new, fully-articulating touchscreen LCD panel with the same 460K-dot resolution as its older sibling, complete with its signature anti-reflection coating. Another feature which has made its way through the line is Nikon's "Dynamic Fine Zoom," which is said to improve image quality for the first 2x of the camera’s digital zoom capabilities.

The Nikon S6900 runs off a rechargeable lithium-ion battery rated at 180 shots and 40 minutes of video per charge. As for storage, it supports SD, SDHC and SDXC memory cards, which complements about 25MB of internal memory.

The Nikon S6900 also features a unique built-in "kickstand" feature aimed at making it even easier to take selfies and group shots from a flat surface. From the front, it's evident that there’s a new button on the front of the camera, which serves as a secondary shutter release button for self-portraits, and there's an additional button on the top, dedicated to turning on and off the camera’s wireless connectivity.

Speaking of wireless connectivity, this year’s S6900 steps it up by including NFC capabilities, in addition to standard Wi-Fi connectivity, designed to improve sharing functionality between your camera and smartphone.

The Coolpix S6900 will be available in March of 2015 in black and pink for a suggested retail price of US$229.95.
