Canon may soon join the growing list of camera makers embracing retro-inspired designs. According to new rumors, the company is developing a vintage-styled full-frame mirrorless camera that blends classic film-camera aesthetics with modern imaging technology.
If the reports prove accurate, Sony would become the only major camera manufacturer without a retro-themed interchangeable-lens camera in its lineup.
According to Canon Rumors, the company is preparing a redesigned version of the upcoming EOS R8 Mark II with styling inspired by classic Canon film cameras. The camera is expected to feature a retro exterior similar in spirit to the Nikon Zf, Nikon Zfc, and Fujifilm’s X-series cameras, with an announcement reportedly planned for September 2026.
What we know so far about the EOS R8 Mark II
Current rumors suggest the EOS R8 Mark II will feature a new 32.5-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor capable of shooting at up to 40 fps using its electronic shutter. Like the current EOS R8, the camera is expected to omit a mechanical shutter.
The camera is also rumored to receive several notable hardware upgrades, including in-body image stabilization (IBIS) and dual SD card slots, making it a more capable hybrid camera for both photography and video.

On the video side, the EOS R8 Mark II is expected to record 4K video, although reports indicate it will not include the higher-resolution 7K recording found on some of Canon’s more recent mirrorless cameras.
Rumors also suggest Canon will intentionally position the camera below the recently announced EOS R6 Mark III. Features such as pre-capture, Open Gate recording, and higher-end connectivity options are not expected to make the jump to the R8 Mark II.
A tribute to the Canon AE-1?
The timing of the rumored camera has fueled speculation that it could commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Canon AE-1, which debuted in 1976 and became one of the most influential film cameras ever produced.
According to the report, Canon could introduce two versions of the EOS R8 Mark II—a conventional model alongside a retro-styled variant. Such an approach would mirror Nikon’s strategy, where the Z5 II and Zf share many internal components while targeting different audiences through their exterior design.
If Canon does enter the retro camera segment, it would compete directly with the Nikon Zf, a camera that has attracted photographers by combining modern imaging performance with classic styling inspired by Nikon’s FM-series film cameras.
Pricing and availability
Canon has not officially announced the camera, and there is currently no information regarding pricing. According to current rumors, the retro-styled EOS R8 Mark II is expected to be announced in September 2026.
As with all pre-release reports, the information should be treated as speculation until Canon makes an official announcement.
