OM System has finally unveiled its new PEN camera, marking the first PEN-series camera released under the OM System brand since the company took over Olympus’ imaging division. The new camera combines the classic PEN design with modern features, including a 20.4-megapixel sensor, electronic viewfinder, image stabilization, and interchangeable-lens Micro Four Thirds compatibility.
The PEN series dates back to 1959, when the original PEN became the first half-frame camera produced in Japan. Decades later, Olympus revived the name for the digital era with the PEN E-P1, the second Micro Four Thirds camera and the first digital PEN.
PEN cameras have traditionally focused on compactness and portability, making them approachable alternatives to larger interchangeable-lens cameras. The new OM System PEN continues that philosophy while adding features aimed at modern photographers and content creators.
Classic PEN Design With a Modern Touch
The new PEN features a rangefinder-style layout with an electronic viewfinder positioned in the top-left corner of the camera. It also has an IPX1 rating for dust and splash resistance, giving the compact camera some protection for everyday shooting.
At the heart of the PEN is a 20.4-megapixel Live MOS sensor paired with OM System’s TruePic IX image processor. The sensor is the same one used in the OM System OM-5 Mark II, while a 5.5-stop image stabilization system helps reduce camera shake when shooting handheld.
The EVF has a resolution of 2.36 million dots and is paired with a 3-inch, 1.04-million-dot swivel touchscreen.
Plenty of Physical Controls
Despite its compact design, OM System has given the PEN a relatively extensive set of physical controls. The top plate features a mode dial, front control dial, and shutter release, along with a dedicated record button.
A power switch also doubles as a selector for photo, video, and S&Q modes. Around the back, the camera has a command dial, CP button, AF-ON button, and the usual navigation and playback controls.
There is no dedicated autofocus joystick, however. Users will need to select focus points using the directional pad or touchscreen.
Customizable Color and Monochrome Profiles
One of the more distinctive features is a switch on the front of the camera for quickly selecting between Color and Monochrome profiles. These profiles can be customized and are also available when recording video.
Color Profiles can be adjusted for settings including saturation, curves, and contrast, while Monochrome Profiles offer additional controls such as color filter effects. The system is designed to let photographers create a more distinctive, film-like look directly in camera.
121-Point Autofocus and 30fps Shooting
The PEN uses a 121-point autofocus system with support for human and pet eye detection. Subject detection is limited to still photography.
For action, the camera can shoot at up to 30 frames per second. It also supports features including focus stacking and bracketed HDR, giving photographers additional options for specialized shooting.
4K Video and OM-Cinema Modes
The PEN can record 4K video at up to 24 frames per second in both horizontal and vertical orientations. This makes it possible to capture footage for conventional video as well as vertically oriented social media content.
For filmmakers and content creators, the camera also includes OM-Cinema1 and OM-Cinema2 modes, which provide a wider dynamic range. The same creative controls available for still photography can also be used when recording video.
Pricing and Availability
The OM System PEN is now available for pre-order from B&H Photo for $999. It will be offered in silver and black finishes, with shipping scheduled to begin on October 14.
The new PEN marks the return of one of Olympus’ most recognizable camera lines under its new OM System identity, bringing the series’ compact philosophy into the modern digital era.
