The repeated delays surrounding Sony’s FX5 have been puzzling, particularly because Sony has not publicly explained the specific problem behind the production issues. A new report from an early FX5 user may provide a clue, pointing to a potential problem with the cinema camera’s LCD assembly.

According to a Reddit post shared by Sony Alpha Rumors, a Sony FX5 user in Mexico received three camera bodies in late August, which was around the time Sony originally planned to begin shipping the camera. The user claims that all three units exhibited the same problem with the LCD assembly.

FX5 LCD Can Reportedly Shift Out Of Position

According to the user, the FX5’s LCD screen can shift out of its intended position, creating a large enough gap to expose some of the camera’s internal electronic components.

More concerning is that the issue reportedly wasn’t isolated to a single defective unit. The user says all three FX5 bodies they received exhibited the same problem.

If accurate, the issue could help explain Sony’s decision to delay the FX5. Sony has previously described the delays as being related to production and quality-control issues, but has not provided specific details about the affected component.

A gap large enough to expose internal electronics would potentially be more significant than a cosmetic issue, particularly on a professional cinema camera that is expected to withstand demanding shooting conditions.

What About The DRAM Shortage?

The reported LCD problem has also prompted speculation about another issue surrounding the FX5: the ongoing DRAM shortage.

Sony Alpha Rumors suggests that if the LCD assembly is indeed responsible for the delay, it could mean that the camera’s production problems are unrelated to the memory shortage. However, there is currently no confirmation from Sony that the DRAM shortage has played any role in the FX5’s delays in the first place.

The distinction is important. While the LCD report may provide a plausible explanation for the delay, it does not establish that memory shortages are not affecting Sony’s camera production more broadly.

Sony FX5 Could Face Another Delay

The FX5 has already been delayed multiple times, and a recent report suggests that its expected shipment date has now moved to mid-November.

Sony has yet to confirm that date or publicly identify the LCD assembly as the cause of the delays. For now, the reported problem should therefore be treated as an unverified explanation rather than an official diagnosis.

The development could also have implications for Sony’s next camera. The company recently registered a new camera in China, with Sony Alpha Rumors speculating that it could be the long-rumored A7S IV or another mid-to-high-end model manufactured in Japan.

Sony Alpha Rumors suggests that the new camera could arrive before Christmas, although there is currently no official information about its specifications or launch date.
