A new Kickstarter project from I’m Back GmbH is aiming to convert 35mm film cameras into digital ones—without the bulky add-ons typically seen in similar projects.

Called the I’m Back Roll APS-C, the system is designed to fit entirely inside a camera body using the film compartment itself. That means no external screens or large attachments, keeping the original look and handling of the camera mostly intact.

A Film Cartridge With a Digital Sensor Inside

At the core of the I’m Back Roll is a 26-megapixel Sony IMX571 APS-C sensor, a chip commonly used in astronomy cameras for its low noise and high dynamic range.

The module is loaded into the camera like a standard roll of film. The battery sits inside the cartridge, while the sensor and electronics are distributed along a custom circuit board inside the camera body, housed in a CNC-machined aluminum structure for protection and heat management.

The system can capture both RAW and JPEG photos, as well as 4K video. It also includes film-style color profiles inspired by Fujifilm, Kodachrome, Yashica, and Ilford.

No Screen, Remote-Based Shooting

Unlike earlier versions of similar products, the I’m Back Roll doesn’t include a built-in display. Instead, it relies on a Bluetooth remote control.

To take a photo, users press the remote to activate the sensor, then trigger the camera’s shutter within a two-second window. The system also supports ISO settings from 100 to 6400 and basic exposure adjustments.

Files can be stored internally (64GB, 128GB, or 256GB options) and transferred via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB-C.

Compatibility and Modifications

The I’m Back Roll does not have an external screen or wires, preserving the look and feel of shooting with an analog camera.

The company says the module is compatible with most 35mm film cameras, though it does require removing the film pressure plate to make room for the internal components.

I’m Back also notes that it is working on solutions for more specialized systems, including Leica M cameras and underwater housings for models like the Nikonos.

Building on Previous Attempts

I’m Back GmbH has been developing similar products since 2018, with earlier versions using smaller Micro Four Thirds sensors. Those models introduced a 2x crop factor, which limited usability—especially for wide-angle lenses.

Moving to an APS-C sensor helps reduce that crop and makes the system more practical across a wider range of lenses.

Strong Kickstarter Backing

The project has already attracted significant interest, with over 900 backers and more than $500,000 raised—well beyond its initial funding goal. The campaign still has several weeks remaining.

Pricing and Timeline

The I’m Back Roll APS-C is expected to retail for:

  • $699 (64GB)
  • $749 (128GB)
  • $799 (256GB)

Kickstarter backers can currently pledge between $499 and $999, depending on the bundle. The company is targeting a December 2027 delivery.
