Ilford Launches Delta 400 Collector’s Edition With Anti-Halation Layer

Ilford has announced a limited-edition version of its popular black-and-white film with the Delta 400 Professional Collector’s Edition. The new film retains the same ISO 400 speed and processing times as the standard Delta 400 Professional but introduces a clearer film base and anti-halation protection.

The Collector’s Edition comes in an all-black cassette and carton and is being produced in limited quantities. Ilford says the new version could offer subtle improvements in dynamic range, shadow detail, scanning, and sharpness.

A New Delta 400 Film Base

The Collector’s Edition is coated onto a clearer roll film base with anti-halation protection, a first for Ilford’s 35mm black-and-white films.

According to Ilford, the combination offers subtle improvements to image quality, including better shadow detail and sharpness. The clearer base is also intended to provide benefits when scanning negatives.

“This professional, high-quality, fine grain, super sharp black & white film is now available with an all-black cassette and carton,” Ilford said on Instagram. “Coated onto a clearer roll film base with anti-halation protection, this limited edition version offers subtle improvements to dynamic range, shadow detail, scanning, and sharpness.”

The film retains the ISO 400 speed of standard Delta 400 Professional, along with the same processing times.

Why Is It a Limited Edition?

While Ilford is presenting the Collector’s Edition as an improved version of Delta 400 Professional, the company is using the limited run to gauge interest in the new formulation.

“It’s a test to see what people think and if there’s a market for it,” Ilford said in the comments of its original announcement.

If the response is positive, Ilford says it could potentially bring the film back as a regular product. However, the company cautions that a permanent version would likely cost more than the existing Delta 400 Professional.

The added anti-halation layer is one reason for the potential price increase. Ilford has not previously used anti-halation protection on its 35mm black-and-white film, so producing the new version as a permanent product would introduce an additional manufacturing cost.

The Same Price as Standard Delta 400

For the limited-edition run, Ilford is keeping the price in line with the standard Delta 400 Professional.

That makes the Collector’s Edition particularly interesting for photographers who already enjoy Delta 400 and want to experiment with the new formulation without paying a premium for the limited edition.

I’ve used standard Delta 400 Professional myself and found it to be one of the better black-and-white films I’ve shot. The opportunity to try a version with anti-halation protection and a clearer film base is therefore particularly interesting, especially while the Collector’s Edition is available at the same price.

Pricing and Availability

The Ilford Delta 400 Professional Collector’s Edition is priced at $15.19 and will be available through authorized retailers.

Ilford has not disclosed how many rolls will be produced, but the Collector’s Edition will only be available in limited quantities while supplies last.
