Canon ELPH 350 HS Review -- Initial Impressions

Preview posted 02/05/2015

The Canon ELPH line has long been a popular one for shooters wanting a stylish point-and-shoot companion with enough zoom range and features to get the job done in a small and inexpensive package. This year's entry in the middle range of the line is the PowerShot ELPH 350 HS, which replaces last year's 340 HS.

So what's new?

Not as much as last year's to its predecessor, as the 340 HS was the first model to introduce Wi-Fi and active NFC communications into the 300 series. The most noticeable difference with the 350 HS is a 20.2-megapixel sensor which has roughly 4.2 more megapixels placed onto the small 1/2.3"-type sensor chip. We're certainly fans of increased resolution on larger chips, but the trend of cramming more onto small chips is a matter of debate, and most of us at IR fall squarely into the camp requesting less resolution in favor of greater light gathering ability from larger photosites. But that's just one side of the argument and I'm sure there are shooter's who prefer more as well, and if so this model will likely not disappoint.

Also new to this series is the Auto Zoom feature which allows the camera to identify the subject, focus AND frame it for the perfect shot and then shoot. Sounds pretty neat, actually!

Carrying over from last year's model is the same 12x optical zoom lens with presumably the same equivalent range of 25-300mm (we weren't provided specs before press time) as well as remaining the same with a maximum ISO sensitivity of 3200. Creative Shot mode allows for a myriad of output options while still preserving the original file, Smart Auto is carried over as well as Hybrid Auto, which takes still images and short video clips and combines them into a video highlight reel of a vacation or a shooting outing -- no video editing software or skills required.

Also similar, the camera can be controlled remotely via Canon's free software using an iOS or Android device, allowing for added shooting convenience for certain situations. The ELPH 350 HS also sports a dedicated movie button that shoots up to 1080p Full HD video, and has a similar 3-inch 461K-dot LCD screen.

The PowerShot ELPH 350 HS is slated to be available in April 2015 in black or silver for an estimated retail price of ~US$210.
