Laowa has introduced a new tilt-shift lens with an unusually fast F2 maximum aperture. The 24mm F2 Zero-D Tilt-Shift is designed for full-frame and medium-format cameras, combining perspective control with a bright aperture suited for indoor, low-light, and nighttime photography.
Laowa describes the lens as the fastest tilt-shift option in its class, giving photographers more flexibility when working in challenging lighting conditions.
Fast F2 Aperture and Extensive Perspective Control
The 24mm F2 Zero-D Tilt-Shift offers up to ±10 degrees of tilt for adjusting the plane of focus and ±12mm of shift for perspective correction or capturing images for panoramas and stitching.
However, the maximum tilt and shift movements cannot be used simultaneously. Increasing the amount of tilt reduces the available shift, and vice versa. The maximum movement also varies depending on the camera mount, particularly when focusing at infinity.
The F2 maximum aperture is one of the lens’s main selling points. Compared with existing tilt-shift options, the brighter aperture should make it easier to shoot indoors, in low-light environments, and at night.
This could make the lens particularly interesting for architectural photography, landscapes, astrophotography, and nightscapes, where perspective control and low-light performance can both be important.
As its name suggests, the lens also features Laowa’s Zero-D optical design, which is intended to minimize distortion and keep straight lines from appearing curved across the frame. This is particularly useful for architectural photography, where maintaining accurate geometry is essential.
Optical Design and Manual Focus
The optical construction consists of 13 elements in 10 groups, including five extra-low dispersion elements, two glass aspherical elements, and four ultra-high-refractive-index glass elements.
Laowa says the optical design delivers high resolution and strong contrast while minimizing flare and ghosting. The lens also uses a 14-blade aperture diaphragm.
Focusing is entirely manual, which is typical for tilt-shift lenses and gives photographers direct control over focus placement. The minimum focusing distance is 0.25 meters, with a maximum magnification ratio of 0.194x.
Despite its complex optical design and mechanical adjustments, the lens remains relatively compact for its class. It measures 119mm long, weighs 860g, and accepts 77mm front filters.
Full-Frame and Medium-Format Mount Options
The Laowa 24mm F2 Zero-D Tilt-Shift will be available for Sony E, Nikon Z, Canon RF, and L-mount full-frame cameras. It will also be compatible with Fujifilm GFX and Hasselblad XCD medium-format systems.
Laowa is also expanding its medium-format lineup by releasing the previously available 55mm and 100mm F2.8 Tilt-Shift 1X Macro lenses for the Hasselblad XCD mount.
Pricing and Availability
The Laowa 24mm F2 Zero-D Tilt-Shift is priced at $1,249 and is now available through the Laowa online store and B&H Photo.
