Tamron has announced the 16-50mm F/2.8 A, a compact standard zoom lens designed for APS-C mirrorless cameras. Available for Sony E, Nikon Z, Canon RF, and Fujifilm X mounts, the lens combines a versatile zoom range with a constant F/2.8 aperture in a body measuring just 79.6mm long and weighing 305 grams.
The lens offers a 24-75mm full-frame equivalent focal range, making it suitable for landscapes, travel, portraits, street photography, and everyday shooting. Its constant F/2.8 aperture also gives photographers more flexibility in low-light conditions and indoor environments.
The new lens enters a competitive segment that includes the Sigma 18-50mm F/2.8 DC DN Contemporary and Nikon’s NIKKOR Z DX 16-50mm F/2.8 VR.
Optical Design and Image Quality
The Tamron 16-50mm F/2.8 A uses 14 elements in 10 groups, including one low-dispersion element, two molded-glass aspherical elements, and two hybrid aspherical elements. Tamron says the optical design delivers high image quality, sharp rendering, and soft bokeh.
The lens uses a seven-blade aperture diaphragm and Tamron’s BBAR-G2 coating to help reduce ghosting and flare.
VXD Autofocus and Close-Focusing Capability
The lens features Tamron’s VXD linear motor autofocus system, which is designed to provide fast, precise, and quiet focusing. Tamron says the system can track moving subjects effectively, including the unpredictable movements of children and pets. Its quiet operation also makes the lens suitable for video recording.
The minimum focusing distance is 0.15 meters at the wide end and 0.29 meters at the telephoto end, giving photographers additional flexibility when shooting close-up subjects.
Compact Design With Weather Protection
Despite its constant F/2.8 aperture, the 16-50mm F/2.8 A measures just 79.6mm long and weighs 305 grams. Its compact design makes it a practical option for photographers who want a fast standard zoom without carrying a large lens.
The exterior follows Tamron’s “Toned Profile Next” design philosophy, which the company describes as a mechanical style intended to appeal to modern users. The lens also features moisture-resistant construction and a fluorine coating on the front element to help repel water and oil.
Tamron has also introduced a redesigned lens cap with dedicated strap holes on both sides. These allow users to attach the cap to a camera strap or camera body using commercially available cords, reducing the risk of dropping or losing it while shooting or transporting the lens.
