Viltrox continues its rapid product expansion with the launch of the budget-friendly AF 9mm F/2.8 Air for Fujifilm X-mount. The compact ultra-wide lens was first introduced two months ago for Sony E and Nikon Z systems, and its arrival for Fujifilm shooters has been highly anticipated.
“With its compact footprint that slips easily into a jacket pocket or camera bag and stays true to the Air series’s signature lightweight and minimal design, this lens becomes an ideal choice for travel and street photography, allowing creators to capture stunning wide-angle shots,” Viltrox said when the lens was first released.
Optical Design and Image Performance
The X-mount version shares the same optical construction as the E and Z-mount models, featuring 13 elements in 11 groups. These include three extra-low dispersion, three high refractive, and two aspherical elements to reduce chromatic aberrations and maintain edge-to-edge sharpness. A multilayer nano coating on the front element also works to minimize flares and ghosting for clean, detailed images.
The fast F/2.8 aperture supports low-light shooting, while the 9mm focal length lends itself to landscapes, architecture, and dynamic travel perspectives. The seven-blade diaphragm produces a smooth, rounded bokeh when focusing close.
Compact Build and Autofocus
Autofocus is powered by an STM motor designed to deliver quiet and responsive performance. The lens can focus as close as 0.13m with 0.15x magnification, opening creative possibilities for ultra-wide close-ups.
Portability remains the defining feature of the Air series, and the 9mm model weighs just 175g and measures only 56.4mm long — particularly well-suited to smaller Fujifilm bodies like the X-S20 or X-M5.
Pricing and Availability
The Viltrox AF 9mm F/2.8 Air for Fujifilm X-mount is priced at $199 and is now available through B&H. The lens also remains available for Sony E and Nikon Z APS-C mirrorless cameras.
